How Much Does SEO Cost in New Jersey? (2026 Pricing)
Real 2026 SEO pricing for New Jersey businesses: what local SEO costs per month, what a fair retainer includes, red flags, and the price we publish.

The short answer
In New Jersey in 2026, reputable local SEO for a small business generally runs $750 to $2,000 per month. Where you land in that range depends on how many towns you want to show up in, how competitive your trade is, and whether the work includes your Google Business Profile and AI search, or just "rankings."
At Over the Fold the number is published, not quoted: $1,250/month for SEO & AI search, month to month after the first 90 days. It covers Google Business Profile management, local content, technical SEO and monthly AI-visibility tracking. Every price we charge is on our pricing page. The rest of this guide explains what those dollars should buy, so you can compare any SEO proposal you get, including ours.
How SEO is priced in New Jersey
Monthly retainer, the most common model
Most local SEO is sold as a monthly retainer, because the work is ongoing: your Google profile needs posts and photos, your site needs new pages for the towns and services you want to win, and Google keeps changing what it rewards. A retainer is the right model for a service business that wants a steady flow of calls from search.
One-time projects
Some agencies sell a one-time SEO setup or audit. That can be useful to fix technical problems or clean up a neglected Google profile, but it is a starting point, not a strategy. Your competitors keep publishing and collecting reviews after your project ends.
Bundled with a website
Many web designers say "SEO included" in a website quote. What that should mean: meta titles, schema markup, clean headings, fast load times, and Google Analytics and Search Console connected at launch. That is the foundation, and it should be standard. It is not the same as ongoing SEO, so ask which one you are getting.
What drives the monthly price
How many towns you want to show up in. Ranking in one town is a different job from ranking across Essex, Bergen and Hudson counties, or across the river in New York City. More service areas means more location pages and more content.
How competitive your trade is. A roofer, a personal injury firm or a dentist in North Jersey is fighting for the same map pack as dozens of established businesses. A niche specialty with few local competitors moves faster for less.
Where your site is starting from. If your site is slow, built on a heavy page builder, or missing basic structure, part of the early budget goes to fixing that before new content can work. One of our clients went from a 22-second load time to about 1 second, and their PageSpeed score from 56 to 86. That kind of fix makes everything else you pay for work harder.
Whether AI search is included. In 2026, your customers ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews who to call, not just Google's blue links. Getting your business named in those answers takes structured data, clear answers on your pages and consistent mentions across the web. If a proposal does not mention AI search optimization at all, it is pricing for how search worked a few years ago.
What a fair SEO retainer should include
- Google Business Profile management. For local service businesses, the map pack is where most of the calls come from. Your profile needs the right categories, regular posts, photos and a plan for getting reviews.
- Local content. Service pages and town pages that answer the questions your customers actually search, written for people first.
- Technical SEO. Speed, schema markup, indexing and fixing what breaks. Most of this is invisible to you and essential to Google.
- Reporting you can read. Calls, form leads and rankings for the searches that bring you customers, not a dashboard full of vanity metrics.
- AI visibility tracking. A monthly check of whether ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews mention your business when people ask for what you do.
You can see how we handle each of these on our local SEO page.
Red flags in an SEO proposal
Guaranteed page-one rankings. No one controls Google. Guarantees usually mean tactics that can get your site penalized, or rankings for searches nobody makes.
Long lock-in contracts. SEO takes a few months to show movement, so a short initial term is reasonable. A 12-month contract with no exit protects the agency, not you.
Reports full of traffic, light on leads. More visitors means nothing if they are in the wrong town or looking for something you don't sell. Ask how the agency measures calls and form submissions.
Prices that only exist after a sales call. If an agency cannot tell you what SEO costs before you get on the phone, the price is usually based on what they think you will pay.
Is SEO worth it for a NJ service business?
For most local service businesses, yes, because the people searching are already looking to hire. One of our home-improvement clients now gets about 146 inquiries a month, up 42%, and in the AI answers we track, 76% recommend that client's brands. Results like that come from doing the boring work consistently: a strong Google profile, fast pages, real answers and steady reviews.
